A cartoon with Star Wars.

How the idea of this personalized caricature came about.

It was this summer of unbearable heat that we were in Denia, chatting lively with Jesus. At a certain moment my mobile began to ring the Imperial Star Wars March.

Imperial March.

If I remember correctly, I was called to order a caricature or something. when cutting, he says:

–Well, I also have on my mobile the Imperial March as a ringtone, and also Scherzo for X-Wings’ ("Star Wars – Episode VII – The Force Awakens")

There the conversation derived, as it could not be otherwise, to the Empire of Star Wars, the Jedi, Darth Vadder, the Wonderful Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, y Luke Skywalker.

I also told him my experience of the first time I saw that wonderful movie (which is now the IV) Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope o Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Star Wars.

Looks like it would have happened: – Long ago, in a galaxy far away …

A good day came Gabriel to invite me to go to the movies:

And what are we going to see?

"Star Wars," he replied.

– Well, come on, I'll see you tonight. – I said yes, without thinking.

I admit that at the time, I had no idea what he was talking about. Although as a child I was very fond of cinema, drawing and reading comics, they occupied most of my hours of freedom, of that wonderful freedom, outside of school.

So that night we went to that neighborhood cinema, to see a movie that I didn't know completely, that I hadn't even heard her name until that half day, that I doubted if I was going to like it or not, since I was a big fan of pirate movies, and galaxies nothing, or almost, just the series. Star Treek, (the original) that I am already abuelete.

The matter up to that moment looked bad, it went through my head, which was going to bore me like a mushroom, and I would be trapped in the cinema, by a commitment of friendship.

I endured esthetically in the armchair of the cinema without complaining, without giving a scream, a scream, clinging to the arms, without a tear falling, and desperate from time to time. of what was at the time, a visual torture.

When I left the cinema, I literally drooled uncontrollably, my head had burst into a thousand pieces, I couldn't believe what I had seen. A stunning visual show, something wonderful.

How could I draw that? It was too beautiful, dizzying, I couldn't describe it, I couldn't say a word, and now that I'm writing this, I don't remember thanking Gabriel, nor, out of shame, telling him some things that happened to me later.

Would the swords of the Jedi exist? Maybe they made them for the film and there were no laser swords for sale, like those of the pirates, I wanted one. It's real The Force, Can there be people who possess it and move objects with the power of their mind? (I admit, I tried more than once back then)

I had thousands of doubts and questions, but what I remember most was going out to the courtyard of the house and spending hours looking at the stars, hoping to see some of those ships pass by so fast and impressive, or discovering, some sign in the sky, that indicated to me, that what I had seen was real, that they really existed.

Ridiculous isn't it? But at that time, little or nothing was said about FX – special effects – and in those times, without computers, without the internet, without Photoshop, or 3D, the progress they had made with Star Wars was impressive, simply, it had to be true, it was something never seen, a full-blown technological revolution.

The Star Wars cartoon.

After that conversation, Jesus He commissioned his caricature from me. What he wanted was to appear in his drawing, in front of the dashboard of the driving bus. It carries one of those two-story giants, a bus that in vacuum weighs a whopping twenty tons, with capacity for eighty-two passengers and that is fully digitized.

The first time I saw one of those, it was in Valencia. I don't know why, they changed the bus at the last minute and touched me in one of those moles. When I saw the driver's dashboard, a spaceship immediately popped into my head.

Photograph of the dashboard, and the drawing of that dashboard.

It was full of lights and buttons everywhere, if it even looked like the cockpit of an airplane. And this was only part, when the time came I took several photographs of the dashboard in front of the steering wheel, the board seen in the image and the platform through which the passengers climb.

And in addition, to draw it, it was a great headache, since it could not be something imagined, I could not draw any board, if what Jesus had commissioned me to do was that it was the one on the bus, which he was driving.

So many hours it took, locating the different parts, and making fit, piece by piece, each panel of buttons, screens. And thanks to the fact that in the cartoons you can exaggerate, it was that I got it to enter perfectly, everything in its place.

But back to the idea of this caricature, I was going to draw a driver in front of the impressive controls of a bus, as if out of space. There I remembered, the ringtones of Jesus' phone, and I said to him:

What if we do the cartoon with some Star Wars motif?

As soon as he accepted the proposal, a battle came to my mind, that happened in space and that was with many effects, shots and shines. But that initial idea, that of outer space, I ended up discarding.

Ships and the Making Of of Star Wars.

As I always say, to make a caricature is to draw mainly eyes, nose and mouth, exaggerating the features, which If there is no exaggeration, it is not a caricature.

But that wasn't the tricky part. When the time came to raise the battle, I should choose the ships, and being talking about a bus, I wanted to draw the road. Then they could not miss the AT-AT these huge-sized zoomorphic vehicles, which inside carry a large number of imperial troops, and which go on firm ground.

So I took as a reference an image of the battle of the frozen planet of Holth, where the Snowspeeder and the AT-AT.

The Snowspeeders and AT-AT.

I know someone will say: – Oh, but draw with references. Of course, all cartoonists use references, otherwise this would be impossible. But since this is about cartoons, I thought drawing the ships as is, it wasn't very attractive, so I decided, tune them a little, deform and / or add some element that they did not have, such as exhaust pipes or a TV antenna.

The AT-AT was the last one I drew and to do the tunning, I chose to put a kind of horn, since a Jesus He likes music a lot and always carries his pendrive, loaded with it.

My AT-AT drawing.

I also drew a ship Advanced TIE Prototype V1, known as Imperial fighters. Already in another opportunity, I had drawn them, but for my caricatures I have two fundamental premises:

I don't use the same drawing for another cartoon. That is, none of the bodies or objects I draw for one caricature I use in another. Each client has a new drawing and real original. And the other, it's not doing any copy and paste, bottles, labels, magazines, posters, shields, etc.

Drawing the ships, dashboard and dashboard took me a number of hours, but it was worth the result. I know that the purists of the saga, can offend the tunning, but we are talking about a caricature, and in this field of drawing, that of caricatures, everything can be allowed. Also for it to be in quotation marks, authentic, could not miss The insurmountable R2D2.

Now there was a lack of clothing. Jesus, that as the driver of that awesome bus, I decided to dress him in the fighter's uniform X – Wing a Star Wars classic, who are the pilots of starfighters ALA – X, and behind it, the sign of their destination: Denia.

The final job.

Everything that began with the sound of a mobile phone, and with the idea of drawing it on the bus in front of its dashboard, ended with a personalized caricature, full of details, and an enormous amount of work hours.

That after making the sketches it was necessary to ink and paint, make the background, see that the illuminations were correct and that everything had a unity, so that there would not be a battle and a separate caricature.

Finally, I leave the caricature in full and the music of Scherzo for X-Wings’ ("Star Wars – Episode VII – The Force Awakens") to give a little atmosphere. I hope you like it, that I had a great time.
