When the day begins in the studio and the first lights come in, normally my work is already scheduled from the day before, if not months before planning. Everything is debated between the digital, the old pencil and then the style, caricature, portrait, fan art, …y hyperrealism for whatever, sometimes a medium or very long time of search for references, documentation that will occupy part of the hard disks and according to the chosen, hours or days of process. But sometimes, unexpectedly things arise, that for time throw on the ground everything programmed and with self-imposed deadlines, which I like to meet.
It turns out that when I started thinking about making the fan magazine of Game of Thrones, the question was whether Would making a publication where there are only cartoon drawings be boring? If the reader is to some extent a "lover" of cartoon drawing, perhaps not, but if he is not a big fan of it, it would only be turning pages. So I decided to add some text, telling a little bit of the performance that each character has in the story and something about the actors who interpret the series and trying to take care and a lot of the layout.
Given the set, it seemed to me that I should add more than illustrations to "decorate" some page than another, with dragons and crows. So the solution was to make some joke with the latter to "break" a little what to the reader might seem monotonous.
To make the drawings with the crows I made several sketches with text, in a notebook of these that we almost always carry those that we like to scratch papers all the time. I selected only two, and added them to the fanzine. The rest, go to sleep, maybe to put in the next number.
The unexpected.
We were at a role-playing event, when who was my neighbor, Yoel, he came over to say hello. Conversation comes and goes, we end up talking about fanzines and comics. That's when I showed him my notebook where they were. the sketches of the crows.
Almost instantly he said – Hey, this is great..
The crows? – I asked in amazement, since they were only sketches and with a much simpler, simpler drawing than I am used to.
– They're funny. – He said.
– Well, I could make a fanzine out of them; I don't know what you think?
–It would be good – He replied.
Once I was home, the idea was in my head: Make a post with the crows?
They would talk about movies and TV series, but I saw a certain disconnection Make them talk about a single series or several in the same fan magazine? Making loose jokes could result in a large "unconnected pile" that would only lead to boredom and lack of interest. So we had to look for a story, that would serve as a common thread of everything.
In a next post, I will tell you more about this new fanzine in which without having foreseen it, or thought about it, I am working. BROWSINGS!
