Cartoon of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings

Cartoon of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn riding horses in The Lord of the Rings - Woorons

A new cinema drawing in Woorons

At Woorons we continue with our catalog of film cartoons and series.

On this occasion, it has been the turn of one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema: Aragorn, played by Viggo Mortensen in the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings.

The idea was simple: to make a caricatured portrait that captured the essence of montaaz, but exaggerating its most recognizable features. The result is this digital illustration in which he appears on horseback, with the sword in hand and that intense look that characterizes the heir of Gondor.

The character: Aragorn and the work of Viggo Mortensen

Close-up of the caricature of Viggo Mortensen's face as Aragorn

For those of us who are fans of Tolkien's work and Peter Jackson's films, Aragorn is much more than a warrior. He is the globetrotter, the captain of the Dúnedain, the man who bears the weight of his lineage.

Viggo Mortensen knew how to give him an unparalleled humanity and physical presence. From its disheveled appearance in The Fellowship of the Ring until his coronation in The Return of the King, his interpretation is a pillar of the trilogy.

For this cartoon, we look at those details that we all remember: his long hair, beard, armor and, of course, his inseparable horse.

The Horse: Expression and Battle

Detail of Aragorn's horse cartoon with battle gesture and armor

An important detail in this illustration is the horse, making a nod to Brego, the steed that Aragorn releases and then saves his life. Making the horse was a great challenge, uniting movement, gesture, parody and humor in a single figure: the caricature of an animal, the horse.

As with Viggo Mortensen's face, we look for exaggeration in the animal. We wanted a gesture of "bad milk", a mad and angry steed at the same time as comic, with an anatomy and proportions almost impossible. We were interested in capturing that mixture of effort and madness of battle: the jumping eyes, the disengaged teeth and the splashes of saliva give much more life to the composition.

He wears his armor (the chanfrón) with the white plume, a detail that can be seen in the movies. The idea was for the horse to contrast with Aragorn's seriousness: he puts calm and determination, while the horse brings chaos, brute force and movement of the load. It is a visual counterpoint that helps the drawing not stay flat.

About the illustration: The Craft of Drawing Caricatures

Detail of Aragorn's hand holding the shredded sword in the cartoon

We are not going to discover anything new by saying that drawing cartoons is a trade. It is about simplifying, exaggerating and looking for resemblance through controlled deformation.

In this case, we work with a powerful color palette, using the layer as a red background with splashes reminiscent of the battlefield and the drama of the story.

The armor of the horse, the shredded sword and the armor joined with nails of Aragorn are drawn with the intention of balancing the serious gesture of the rider.

We seek to make a gradual transition towards humor applied to the horse, achieving a visual set that works both for a fan of the saga and for someone who only enjoys a good drawing.

At Woorons we do not intend to reinvent art, just enjoy our work and share it.
